Prototype. Adjust the weighting on each fairness basis and read the resulting distribution of effort.
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework sets targets for the world to reduce its impact on nature, but it does not address how these costs should be shared fairly among countries. This tool divides figurative pools of effort needed to reach global targets between countries accordingly. As the user, you can choose whichever principles of fairness you think are most important when fairly dividing effort. The results help visualize what these choices could mean.
Each of the three targets included in this model has a total to be divided:
The map takes on each target's color.
Each slider represents a fairness weighting for how one could divide effort. You can combine them or only apply one depending on what you think is fair.
The bar underneath shows the resulting mix from your choices, in these same colors.
Important note: Fairness choices are already made implicitly in the process of determining national contributions, as well as during Convention on Biological Diversity deliberations. By developing this framework, we hope to provide a tool that makes these decisions explicit, and to show how different fairness assumptions translate into country-level responsibilities under the Global Biodiversity Framework.
